Guess the food by emoji
Guess the food by emoji is an 8-round daily quiz. Each round shows a short row of food emoji and four dish names. You get one pick. A correct name is worth 1,000 points, so a perfect card is 8,000. The photograph stays out of this mode. FoodGuessr Classic is the mode that uses the photo.
How to read a row
Read left to right. The first emoji is the vessel or the main starch: a bowl, a flatbread, a tortilla, a rice mound, a fried fillet. Later emoji are modifiers, and the modifier is usually the thing that separates two similar plates. Noodles alone could be several soups. Noodles plus peanuts is a different guess from noodles plus herbs and lime. Pork plus pineapple on a tortilla is narrower than pork alone.
Emoji are blunt. A steaming bowl stands in for several noodle soups, so the second and third characters do the work. An egg can mean a ramen topping or a rice bowl topping. Pair it with a pig and you are in a broth. Pair it with chili and you are on rice. Do not stop at the first character unless the row is only one character long.
The four names are there to stop spelling fights. You are not typing “pad thai” against “phad thai”. You are choosing the plate the row was written for. One of the four is exact. The other three share an ingredient, a region, or a shape, which is why a fast click on the first familiar word is the usual miss.
Four rows that are not in the daily pool
These examples are fixed on this page so they can be explained in full. They are not drawn into the eight daily rounds. Today's rows stay in the game above.
🥞 🍁
Maple pancakes
The first emoji is the cooked starch. The second is the pour-on, not a fruit garnish. Maple plus a griddled cake is breakfast in syrup, not a crepe with lemon.
🌭 🟡
Hot dog
A sausage in a split bun, then a yellow smear. Mustard is the tell. Ketchup would be a different second emoji, and it would still be the same sausage if the question only asked for the vessel.
🍩
Glazed donut
One emoji can be the whole answer when the shape is the dish. A ring with a hole is not a bagel unless a second emoji adds salt or a smear.
🍔 🧀
Cheeseburger
The bun-and-patty comes first. Cheese is a modifier, so it sits second. If the cheese were missing, the row would be a hamburger and the options would have to offer both.
What the daily row is allowed to use
The playable pool has 12 dishes, and the day picks 8 of them in an order set by the date. Everyone on the same local date sees the same eight, in the same order, with the same four names shuffled. Option order changes per dish so the answer is not glued to the first button.
A row uses two or three emoji. The set covers noodles, rice, flatbreads, fried fish, a laminated pastry, a bean stew, and a citrus-cured fish. If you have already played Classic today, you may recognize a dish from its photograph and then meet it here as emoji only. The questions are still different: Classic asks for a country and hides the name, this mode asks for the name and hides the country.
There is no partial credit. A miss scores 0 for that round and prints the right name before the next row. You cannot change a pick. That is harsher than Classic, where a close country still refunds part of the guess. Here the name is either the one the row was written for, or it is not.
A short method
Say the row out loud as ingredients before you look at the buttons. “Noodles, pig, egg” is a sentence. “Noodles, herbs, lime” is a different sentence. If you look at the four names first, the most famous dish on the list will pull the click. The buttons are the check, not the reading.
When two names share a bowl, use the last emoji as a tiebreak. Peanuts against herbs, pineapple against a plain tortilla, saffron-pan shrimp against citrus-cured fish. The last character was added because the first one was ambiguous.
After eight rounds the score is stored on this device with the date. It does not change the Classic streak. The streak is only for finishing the country game on consecutive local dates. Finishing this mode, Cuisine Match, and Plate-Off on the same date completes the daily set.
Emoji quiz versus the photo rounds
People search “guess the food by emoji” when they want a name, not a map pin. The photo modes on this site ask where a plate is from, or which plate belongs to a country, or which editorial score is higher. This page asks what the plate is called. That is a smaller question, and it is easy to overthink. The row already contains the ingredients. The buttons only exist so two spellings of the same dish do not both look wrong.
A useful check is to cover the buttons with your hand, say a dish name, then uncover them. If your sentence is on the list, take it. If it is not, the row used a modifier you skipped. The usual skip is the last emoji: a nut, a citrus wedge, a chili, a slice of pineapple. Those are not decoration. They are the reason two noodle dishes are both in the pool.
| Mode | You are shown | You answer |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | Photo, ingredients, description | Country, up to 5 guesses |
| Cuisine Match | A country and four photos | The dish from that country |
| Plate-Off | Two photos | The higher editorial score |
| Emoji | Two or three emoji | The dish name, one pick |
Those four modes are the whole game. Classic is the page most people mean by FoodGuessr. This page is the name quiz beside it. Playing both on the same day does not change either score. They are stored as separate finished dates.
Questions
How do you guess the food by emoji?
Read the emoji left to right as ingredients or the finished plate, then pick one of four dish names. The first emoji is usually the vessel or the main food, and the later emoji are the tell (pineapple on pork, peanuts on noodles, an egg on rice).
How many emoji rounds are in a day?
Eight. Everyone on the same local date gets the same eight puzzles, drawn from a pool of 12. Each correct pick is worth 1,000 points, so a perfect card is 8,000.
Do the emoji spoil the classic FoodGuessr rounds?
They can overlap with dishes used in Classic, but Classic hides the name and asks for a country. Emoji mode asks for the dish name and never shows the photograph.
Is there a penalty for a wrong emoji guess?
You get one pick per round. A miss scores 0 for that round and the answer is shown before the next emoji row.
